What it Means to "Know" Kanji
Occasionally a single kanji is used to write a Japanese word, but more often a kanji will be used in conjunction with hiragana or other kanji. Some kanji can be used in scores of different Japanese words.
The best way to measure proficiency is to count not the number of kanji one knows, but the number of Japanese words that one can write with kanji. It is important for someone who wants to learn to read Japanese to fully appreciate this. Nevertheless, it is easier to count kanji, so it serves as a crude measure of progress. A naive definition of when one "knows" a kanji would be when one would knows all the Japanese words that can be written with that kanji. However, some of these words might be rare and not even recognized by many native Japanese speakers.
The following definition seems useful: one "knows" a kanji when one knows how to write the kanji with the correct stroke order, and furthermore one knows how to write at least two Japanese words with it: one using a kun reading and one using an on reading. The meaning and the pronunciation of the Japanese words should be known. In some cases the kanji might not have a kun reading, so knowing a single Japanese word is sufficient.
To attain basic mastery of Japanese writing, one will need to know how to write an average of maybe five Japanese words per kanji. The number of Japanese words varies per kanji, unfortunately. Judgement should be exercised when deciding which Japanese words to learn to write.
The Order to Learn Kanji
When learning kanji, it is best to start with the most commonly used kanji and leave the rarest kanji for never. One could take this method to the extreme by computing the frequency counts of kanji in a large corpus, sorting the kanji by descending frequency, and learning the kanji in that order. There is such a list in an appendix of the Kanji Learner's Dictionary.
One could learn the kanji in the order the Japanese themselves learn them. The Ministry of Education provides a list of 2136 joyo (regular-use) kanji, and of these 1006 of them are classified as kyoiku kanji and are to be learned by elementary school students. Each kyoiku kanji is assigned a grade from 1 to 6. The rest of the joyo kanji are learned in secondary school. An additional 863 kanji are classified as jinmeiyo and can legally be used in personal names.
The Kanji Learner's Course enumerates the joyo kanji in a candidate order for learning. Each kanji is accompanied by 1 to 5 words which use it and these words never contain forward references; i.e. the words never use higher numbered kanji. The Kanji Learner's Course also groups similar looking kanji as an aid in learning to distinguish them.
Readings
Kanji are used to write Japanese words, sometimes by themselves, but more often in conjunction with hiragana or other kanji. When multiple characters are used to write a word, each mora of the word can be assigned to one of the characters. The mora assigned to a kanji are its reading. Kanji are said to have both sound and meaning. The number of readings a kanji can have is small, but typically there are least two: an onyomi 音読み derived from the Chinese pronunciation of a character and a kunyomi 訓読み derived from a Japanese word matching the meaning of the character. Onyomi tend to be used in words containing multiple kanji, whereas kunyomi tend to be used in words containing a single kanji and one or more hiragana.
Readings are important but one should memorize how to write Japanese words with kanji and not readings. If you have memorized a Japanese word which illustrates a kunyomi, the reading will be clear. If you have memorized a Japanese word which illustrates an onyomi there is a chance of ambiguity—for example if the word has two kanji but three mora—but the best solution is to memorize two words which illustrate that onyomi. An onyomi can have one or two moras, but the 2nd mora is always one of I, U, KI, KU, TI, TU, or N.
Keywords
Kanji have both sound and meaning. Thus there are more kanji than hiragana or katakana.
When a kanji is used to write a Japanese word, both the sound and the meaning must match. In the case of sound, what this means is precise: one of the small number of readings associated with the kanji must occur in the Japanese word, and if the reading isn't the entire word then other characters are used for the phonetic parts not covered by the kanji.
In the case of meaning, what it means for the kanji and the word to match is vague. When reading Japanese one can actually ignore the meaning of the kanji and use the character instead as a stepping stone to the Japanese word the author intends. The meaning of the Japanese word is needed to understand what the author is saying. If the Japanese word is known, there is no need to think about the "meaning" of the kanji at all!
Character dictionaries for English speakers will list the readings, as well as some English words which are called—at least in some dictionaries—keywords and which represent the meaning of the character. A moment of reflection makes it clear that Japanese speakers don't use English words in this way when learning kanji, and one wonders if there is something artificial about keywords. We can't rule out their utility for English speakers, but if a student is serious about learning Japanese, shouldn't Japanese words be used for this purpose instead?
Format
This sheet presents kanji in an order suitable for learning. Each kanji entry consists of two parts.
The first part is a list of commonly used words and phrases which use the kanji. The words and phrases are in a table with three columns. The second column gives the reading of the word or phrase. Kunreishiki romaji is used so the position of accent if any can be indicated. Romaji is useful for typing Japanese on a Western keyboard. Another advantage of romaji—over katakana at least—is that oo and ou are distinguished, as are ee and ei. These two pairs are pronounced the same, but one needs to know which is used in a word when typing it or looking it up in the dictionary. The third column contains English glosses of the word or phrase. If the word or phrase has multiple senses, these are separated by semicolons or newlines.
When choosing example words and phrases in the charts below, I've also tried to limit, if not completely eliminate, the use of higher numbered kanji. However, the first 300 kanji are always allowed, as are higher numbered kanji in the same hundred.
The second part of a kanji entry is example sentences illustrating the use of the words and phrases. Each sentence is followed by an English gloss. The readings of higher numbered kanji in the example sentence are given in parentheses after the sentence. Unfortunately the markup syntax that I am using does not support ruby text. The restriction on the use of higher numbered kanji does not apply to example sentences.
Names
Names or proper nouns are often written in kanji too. There are a discouragingly large number of them, but one must learn how to write some of them to master Japanese.
When deciding whether to include a Japanese surname that could written with the kanji introduced so far, I check Japan's top 100 most common family names as determined by japantimes.co.jp. Incidentally, when translating Japanese, should one translate 姓 as "family name", "surname", or "last name"? The last sounds most natural in English but risks confusion since the Japanese write their family name first, at least in a "Japanese context". Possibly the Japanese will stop putting their family name last in a "Western context" soon: Japan wants international media to put family names first.
